Course overview

Build your expertise to recognise and respond with care to clients experiencing complicated grief and bereavement.

This workshop provides professionals with the knowledge, tools and confidence required to work sensitively with clients navigating complicated grief. You will learn assessment frameworks, support strategies and the importance of self-care when working with individuals and families experiencing loss.

Who should attend

This workshop is designed for clinicians, social workers, community organisation staff, health professionals, youth workers, child and family workers, and counsellors with any level of experience who support individuals or families experiencing grief and loss.

Course structure

This workshop focuses on distinguishing complicated grief from typical bereavement and equips practitioners to recognise its diverse presentations and respond effectively. Participants will:

  • Understand how complicated grief manifests uniquely across individuals and communities
  • Identify the symptoms, patterns, and clinical features associated with complicated grief
  • Develop communication skills tailored for working compassionately with grieving clients
  • Learn to use assessment tools and strategies to accurately recognise complicated grief
  • Acquire practical techniques to support clients through loss and bereavement

About the presenters

Lefteris Patlamazoglou is a counselling psychologist and lecturer in psychology and counselling at Monash University. In his practice, teaching, and research, he has worked extensively with clients experiencing grief, trauma, complex bereavement, and issues related to migration and identity. Lefteris brings specialist expertise in working with LGBTIQA+ communities, migrant populations, and young people, with a research focus on wellbeing, grief, and belonging. His approach acknowledges the intersection of multiple identities and their influence on mental health, resilience, and vulnerability.

  • Registrations for scheduled workshops close 48 hours before the event
  • Payment must be made at least 2 business days before the training date
  • If paying by invoice, proof of payment is required at least 24 hours before the event
