Course overview

Experience live couple counselling sessions and deepen your practice through collaborative reflection with experienced psychotherapists and peers.

This interactive, small group program provides graduates of our Specialist Course in Integrative Couple Therapy with unique opportunities to view and reflect on live couple counselling sessions. Working with the support and feedback of an experienced psychotherapist and trainer, you'll develop your clinical skills through a rich, collaborative learning environment that bridges theory and practice.

The program can be completed standalone, alongside our Clinical Internship, or as part of the Swinburne University Master of Social Science (Couple Counselling). This innovative reflecting model enhances your professional development whilst offering clients another dimension to their therapeutic experience, often deepening and enhancing outcomes.

Career opportunities and professional recognition

Upon completing the program, you will have enhanced your ability to formulate clinical reflections, experiment with different theoretical lenses, and deepen your understanding of couple dynamics through supervised observation and collaborative discussion. This program strengthens your professional development and can contribute to meeting requirements for the Swinburne University Master of Social Science (Couple Counselling).

Course structure

12 weekly sessions involving interactive learning experiences on-site at a busy service delivery centre.

In each session, you will:

  • Watch a live or pre-recorded projection of a couple counselling session
  • Formulate clinical reflections using knowledge gained through readings and orientation
  • Offer reflections to the couple through their counsellor and a representative from the student team
  • Participate in facilitated debriefing discussions with the counsellor and the reflecting team
  • Experiment with different theoretical lenses and hypothesise about the couple and the work
  • Discuss directions taken and not taken, and offer suggestions for the next session.

This reflective model provides a rich, interactive and supportive environment for you to enhance your training and professional development. At the end of each session, the couple is invited to discuss the team's reflections with their counsellor, creating a meaningful therapeutic experience for all involved.

Format

This program offers an interactive, small-group learning experience that combines live observation, collaborative reflection, and facilitated discussion, ensuring a dynamic and supportive educational environment.

Live and recorded observations
Each of the 12 weekly sessions centres on watching a live or pre-recorded projection of a couple counselling session. This provides you with unique insight into real therapeutic work whilst maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and client care.

Reflecting team model
Using knowledge gained through readings and orientation, you'll formulate reflections that are then offered to the couple by their counsellor and a representative from the student team. This innovative approach provides clients with another dimension to their therapeutic experience whilst creating rich learning opportunities for participants.

Facilitated debriefing
Following each session, the counsellor and the reflecting team engage in a facilitated discussion. This provides you with opportunities to experiment with different theoretical lenses, hypothesise about the couple and the work, think about directions taken and not taken, and offer suggestions for the next session.

Experienced facilitationThe program is facilitated by Maggie O'Shea, a registered relationship psychotherapist with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency, an emotion-focused therapist and a mental health social worker. In addition to facilitating the Specialist Course in Integrative Couple Therapy, she is also a member of the Clinical and Counselling Colleges. She has provided supervision for many years in private practice and training contexts.
